Google didn't kill Facebook just yet

Google just announced Google+ for Google Apps users. This means that all of us "corporate" Google users can use the hyped service now.

I have been so lazy in testing Google+ that I actually tested the service for the first time today. All seems fine with it - I don't know what G+ has on Facebook and/or Twitter, but it does its job quite nicely. It might just be a couple years late.

I've got access to site analytics on a number of our different customer sites. Based on that material I dug up some numbers between G+ and Facebook. The numbers are from October 2011. The sites are mainly Finnish consumer sites that are traditionally quite heavy on Facebook likes. I added mearra.com there aswell, but our site is so small that it didn't shake the status to either end (nor did it imply a different pattern in traffic). Anyway - the data consists of over 700 000 visits from Facebook and Google+ during Oct '11. Facebook has 646 times as many referrals to the sites as Google+. In other words, G+ delivered 0,15% of the traffic that Facebook did during that period of time. Pretty cold numbers for Google.

I can't yet tell whether the referral rate from G+ will diminish to zero or start raising. Getting Google Apps to G+ surely won't hurt Google.

If you've been mentally struggling on whether your site needs a G+ button today or tomorrow, I have no suggestion. Adding the button takes literally minutes (not including version control and testing; did all that today for Uusi Suomi Puheenvuoro articles in about 30 mins) but will probably not show at all in your site analytics.

If the G+ vs Facebook status progresses at Puheenvuoro after adding the button, I'll let you know.
